Summary verse

Every syllable contains a medial sound, and it is through the
medial sound that openness and closure are formed.
    Since ㅗ (o) and ㅏ (a) originate from ㆍ[ʌ], they can be
combined and written as ㅘ (oa). Similarly, since ㅜ (u) and
ㅓ (eo) originate from ㅡ(eu), they can also be combined
    and written as ㅝ (ueo).
The sounds ㅛ (yo) and ㅑ(ya), as well as ㅠ (yu) and ㅕ
(yeo), follow a consistent pattern, making their meaning
easy to deduce. ㅛ and ㅑ originate from Heaven ㆍ, while
ㅠ and ㅕoriginate from Earth ㅡ, allowing them to be
    naturally combined.
Among the medial sounds, ㅣ is the most frequently used. ㅣ
combines with other vowels to create 14 new vowel sounds:
    ㅓ ㅢ ㅚ ㅐ ㅟ ㅔ ㆉ ㅒ ㆌ ㅖ (eo eui oi ai ui Yol yai yui
yeoi) [ʌ ɯj oj aj uj əj joj jaj juj jəj] and ㅙ ㅞ ㆈ ㆋ(oai
ueoi yoyai yuyeoi) [waj wəj jajaj jujəj].
