Explanation 4 · Final Consonants
HANGUL, The Cosmic Philosophy · p.200 / 428
Speed of sounds
The final sound ㄷ ㄴ ㅂ ㅁ ㅅ ㄹ (읻 인 입 임 잇 일) ( iD iN
iB iM iT iL) respectively become the endings ㄷ (iD) in 볃
ByeoT, ㄴ (iN) in 군 GuN, ㅂ (iB) in , ㅁ (iM) in 땀
TTam, ㅅ (iT) in 옷 OT and ㄹ in 실 SiL.
These final sounds form pairs of slowness and quickness.
For example, the molar sound ㆁ (iNG)[ŋ] pairs with ㄱ
(iK). When ㆁ is pronounced quickly, it transforms into ㄱ ,
making the sound faster. Conversely, when ㄱ(iK) is
pronounced slowly, it changes back into ㆁ(I[ŋ]), making
the sound slower.
The tongue sounds ㄴ ㄷ (iN iD), lip sounds ㅁ ㅂ (iM iB),
teeth sounds ㅿ ㅅ(iZ iT), and throat sounds ㅇ ㆆ (i◌ i[ʔ])
also form pairs of slowness and quickness in the same way.
